Vegan or not to Vegan that is the question

21 Sep

I love expressing myself through fashion but as a vegan it has been really difficult purchasing shoes and handbags that are leather. So, I decided to go the alternative route. I have been buying my shoes, purses, and an occasional jacket or two from Alternative Outfitters in Pasadena for the last few years. The problem with this is that the items are not built to last because they are made with cheap material, then I realize they are made in China or outside of the U.S. Next I start thinking about how they are made. Are they made using lots of chemicals and is the process worse to our environment? What type of labor laws do they have in the country these shoes and handbags are made in? Its really hard making these decisions and in the end, I feel bad because its all for vanity. I am now spiraling into depression. Why should we live, if all we do is harm the planet and its people?

This is the dialog that goes on in my head! I have recently decided to not put too much emphasis on this. I try to purchase using my best judgement. At times I may not be able to resist the temptations but all I can do is try and I think making an effort can make a difference. I am on the fence about 2nd hand leather items. I feel like that might be better than the fake leather items, but I have to do more research. I don’t like the idea of leather obviously but sometimes cowboy boots are necessary with my outfit.

I’m just being honest.

Don’t be depressed, Ai. You’re a kind person for caring so much about how your actions influence the world. Honestly, you could wear a paper bag and still look great and I bet any cow would be honored to be turned into a hot pair of boots for you.

Thanks Bradford! You are too kind. I just want to do my best both for myself and the world. It’s a balancing act.

The more you read and the more you know can drive you to insanity. Just remember to take time out of your day, meditate if you need to and just remember what you eat is the most important thing, THEN avoiding toxins you are around or put on/in your body.. THEN worrying if real leather is worse.. Or If synthetic ‘plastic’ is the better ‘vegan’ choice. I feel a lot better knowing I’m NOT touching or consuming plastic first and far most.

I agree greenveg synthetic is very problematic. I have also found that synthetic items tend to fall apart easily.
